Spuds are to leave school cafeteria?

Sometimes people will come up with solutions that are not really the solutions because it doesn't really solve the issue. According to the Wall Street Journal on May 17, 2011, USDA considered to eliminate "white potato" in school cafeteria. So they want the school to only serve during lunch time once a week (no more hash brown for breakfast?!) They also suggest to replace high starch vegetables with more nutritional valued vegetables... hmmm orange mash sweet potato? doesn't sound too bad. :-P

Of course, the potato industry is not going to be happy and their fight back idea was to make potato as a "gateway vegetable" to mix with other vegetable so kids will eat the vegetables. Fat chance!! I have not yet seen any kids voluntarily add a cup serving of broccoli, corn, carrots, or peas in their mash potato. They wouldn't even like potato as much anymore I bet if schools start serving veggie stir fry or potato salad with potato in it. The potato industry is over reacting to the situation in this case.

USDA should probably look into the problem of child obesity and eating habit more in-depth than a simple switch of food serving in school cafeteria. Maybe promote healthy diet to parents. The obesity and healthy issues have more to due with the process that potato go through and the amount of people consumed instead of potato itself. Potatoes are nutritious even though large amount of the nutrients are in the skin of potato which is peeled off during food process because it is not desired. (so eat the skins when you make your own potato meal)

I like potato from time to time, they taste great in soup, stew and curry!!
just eat little to none fried and grill ones then life should be good. They should not be abandoned.
